Case No. 2403: Eighteen-year-old BUVANESH SRI A/P PARASUTRAMAN should be at an age filled with hope, dreams and possibilities. Instead, she has lived with illness since childhood, with her condition robbing her of many of the joys of growing up.
[With her dreams out of reach, all she hopes for is a peaceful life.]
Since childhood, BUVANESH has suffered from choreoathetosis, accompanied by global developmental delay (GMFCS Level 2). She was later diagnosed with athetoid cerebral palsy, developmental delay and epilepsy.
Almost all of her 18 years have been spent battling illness. She cannot speak and can only express her emotions and needs through soft murmurs and simple gestures.
Even more heartbreaking is her fear of silence. The television or videos on a mobile phone must be playing almost throughout the day, simply to ensure that there is always some sound around her. Whenever the surroundings become too quiet, she grows restless and distressed, sometimes losing control of her emotions. Only when she hears familiar sounds can she gradually calm down and regain a little sense of security.
When BUVANESH was just seven months old, her aunt, JANAKI A/P M NAGAPPAN, now 58 years old, took over her care. She has been looking after BUVANESH for the past 18 years.
At the time, BUVANESH's mother was suffering from severe diabetes, which resulted in the amputation of all ten toes. As her health continued to deteriorate, she was no longer able to care for her child with special needs. Worried that the little girl would be left without proper care, her aunt resolutely took on the responsibility of raising her, devoting all her time and energy to the child.
Her aunt recalls that BUVANESH once suffered an epileptic seizure that caused her entire body to stiffen uncontrollably. She accidentally fell and fractured her arm. Seeing her suffering broke her aunt's heart.
Although BUVANESH is not her biological daughter, her aunt has always believed that their meeting was a matter of fate. She has never considered giving up and only hopes to continue accompanying BUVANESH on her journey through life.
[After losing her mother, only her father and aunt remain to care for her.]
Sadly, fate has dealt with this family another devastating blow. BUVANESH's mother passed away from heart disease several years ago.
Her 55-year-old father, PARASURAMAN AL THIRUPATHY, suffers from severe obesity that has left him with limited mobility. He can only manage part-time work that pays RM300 a month. The family also relies on RM700 in disability benefits received by his late wife and RM200 in household assistance to make ends meet.
[Please help her secure a year's supply of formula milk and adult diapers.]
Due to her medical condition, BUVANESH requires specialised formula milk and adult diapers on a long-term basis. These essential supplies have become a financial burden that the family struggles to bear each month. With nowhere else to turn, they have sought assistance from us.
We have decided to launch a fundraising campaign to cover BUVANESH's needs for specialised formula milk and adult diapers for one year, amounting to RM3,624. The breakdown is as follows:
- Specialised formula milk — ANMUM ESSENTIAL (RM80 × 12 tins): RM960
- Adult diapers — TENA / DR P PANTS (XL) (RM18.50 × 144 packs): RM2,664
We sincerely appeal to you to extend a helping hand and share this appeal with others. Let kindness come together and ensure that this much-needed assistance reaches BUVANESH as soon as possible.
