For five-month-old CHONG KIM CHEN, breathing with ease has become something so far beyond his reach. Since he was one month old, he had been making a high-pitched wheezing sound whenever he breathed, as though every breath required all the strength in his tiny body. His once rosy little face had lost its liveliness, and seeing him suffer such discomfort is truly heartbreaking.
At first, his parents thought he was simply suffering from a cold. However, after two or three months, his condition did not improve, and he did not recover despite seeing doctors. When he reached five months old, his right chest became noticeably protruded. After examining him, the doctor found that his left chest had begun to collapse, possibly due to his prolonged breathing difficulties, which had already affected the development of his chest cavity.
The doctor recommended that the child undergo an X-ray examination to confirm his condition. However, as the family was not financially well-off, and they were also worried that an X-ray examination might cause side effects because the baby was still very young, they did not proceed with it immediately.

One month later, when his parents brought him to the clinic for an injection again, the doctor realised that his condition could no longer be delayed and immediately arranged for him to be sent to the emergency department. As his blood oxygen level was low, CHONG KIM CHEN had to wear an oxygen mask and was transferred to a major hospital by ambulance.
From basic blood and urine tests, sputum and gastric fluid examinations, to detailed examinations by the Ear, Nose and Throat department, and eventually a high-risk bronchoscopy and lung examination under general anaesthesia, the child had to go through one round of examinations after another. Outside the hospital ward, his parents waited anxiously, their hearts breaking with every passing moment.
He was eventually diagnosed with “Stridor Secondary to Adenoid Hypertrophy,” which caused an obstruction in his airway and made it difficult for him to breathe properly. As he is still too young to undergo surgery, he cannot receive the procedure for now. For the next three to six months, he must rely on a CPAP breathing machine to maintain his breathing while continuing his treatment.

Chong Kim Chen is the youngest child in the family. He has a nine-year-old, five-year-old and four-year-old older sibling, all of whom are currently attending school.
His 42-year-old father, CHONG KUAN YONG, is self-employed with an unstable income, while his 38-year-old mother, CHAN SHU YEN, stays at home to care for their four young children. The parents subsequently sought assistance from us.
After the we reviewed and assessed the family’s circumstances, we decided to raise funds for six months of breathing machine rental fees, as well as one year’s supply of high-nutrition formula milk and diapers for CHONG KIM CHEN. The details are as follows:
