Case No. 2365: At 54 years old, Woo See Lai once bravely overcame Stage 4 nasopharyngeal cancer. After enduring months of difficult treatment, he finally received the reassuring news from his doctor that the cancer had been successfully treated and that he only needed to attend regular follow-up appointments.
The family thought the storm had finally passed. Little did they know that life had another challenge waiting for them.
During his follow-up examination in May this year, they received devastating news. According to the medical report, the cancer cells had spread to his lungs, and he would need to undergo another 6 to 9 cycles of chemotherapy to control the disease.
【Once again, fate has challenged him.】
Sitting in front of the social worker, Woo See Lai spoke slowly and remained calm. There were no tears and no complaints.
Having already faced life and death once, he had learned to keep his pain hidden deep within.
What truly frightened him was not only the cancer, but the thought of undergoing treatment all over again and facing the burden of expensive medical bills once more.
He began to lose confidence and even considered giving up. He thought to himself, “What if the treatment fails and I am left with a huge debt? How will the family cope after I am gone?” These words reflected the deepest struggle of a husband and father.
His wife, Lim Kim Ling (44 years old), who was sitting beside him, knew that her husband did not want to become a burden to the family. She gently reminded him, “You managed to get through it when your condition was so serious before. If you give up now, how can you face all the people who helped you?”
Her words brought Woo See Lai back from the brink of giving up. He knew that his elderly mother could not bear to lose him. As the main provider of the family, he also knew that his wife and children still needed him. After struggling with his emotions, he eventually made the decision to bravely undergo treatment once again.
【Facing another battle for his life.】
Last year, while Woo See Lai was working, his right hand suddenly became numb. After returning home, he could not even hold a spoon properly, and his speech also became less fluent. The symptoms appeared similar to signs of a stroke. He visited a clinic for treatment, but his condition did not improve. It was only during his follow-up examination in May this year that doctors discovered the cancer had already spread to his lungs.
Today, his right hand remains numb with significantly reduced sensation. His reactions have become slower than before, and he occasionally struggles to speak clearly. Because of his condition, he is no longer able to continue working as an excavator operator. The responsibility of supporting the entire family has now fallen on his wife, Lim Kim Ling, who works as a waitress at a food court and earns only a modest income.
The couple has three children. Their 23-year-old eldest son is married, their 17-year-old son is working, while their 14-year-old youngest daughter is still in school. To prevent his elderly mother from worrying, Woo See Lai has kept his condition from her. At present, only his younger sister knows the truth.
After losing his ability to work, the family now depends solely on his wife's income to make ends meet. They simply cannot afford the cost of chemotherapy and have therefore turned to us for assistance.
