Case No. 2290: This baby girl, NUR YASMIN ELIYAS ROFIQ, a Myanmar national, was born with complications involving her airway and severe breathing difficulties. From the moment she entered this world, instead of being embraced by warmth and comfort, she has been fighting painfully for every breath in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Due to the family’s financial hardship, her parents had no choice but to bring her home after her first hospital admission and care for her as best as they could. Sadly, her condition suddenly worsened, and she rushed back to the hospital after experiencing severe breathing difficulties. Despite emergency treatment, doctors were ultimately forced to insert a breathing tube to keep her alive.

[A frightening moment after breakfast.]

The baby’s mother, NUR BEGUM SHUKUR (29 years old), still recalls the terrifying events of that morning with fear and heartbreak. Following the hospital’s feeding schedule, she attempted to feed her baby, but the baby refused to drink milk. Assuming her child was already full, she briefly turned away to prepare breakfast.

When she returned, she was horrified to find her baby struggling to breathe and turning bluish in color. In that moment, it felt as though time had stopped and her world had collapsed. She immediately rushed her daughter to the hospital, only to discover that the condition had become critically serious.

[Emergency surgery is urgently needed.]

After examination, doctors diagnosed the baby with Subglottic Stenosis, a condition where the airway below the vocal cords becomes narrowed or closed, severely affecting breathing. Doctors have clearly stated that immediate surgery is necessary, otherwise her life will be in grave danger.

Hearing that her daughter required surgery shattered the mother’s heart. However, the family simply cannot afford the medical costs and has no choice but to seek public assistance through us.

[A mother’s tears reflect her pain and helplessness.]

While sharing her story with our social workers, the young mother broke down repeatedly in tears. Her tears are not only for her daughter, who is struggling for survival in the intensive care unit, but also for the family’s helpless situation. They are borrowing money everywhere they can just to pay for treatment while struggling to meet even their basic daily needs.

As if the situation was not already difficult enough, the baby unfortunately contracted COVID-19 during treatment, worsening her already fragile condition. Every relapse and complication has brought further hardship to this family.

[A meagre income cannot support this heavy burden.]

NUR YASMIN ELIYAS ROFIQ is the couple’s only child. Her mother is a full-time housewife who takes care of the baby, and her father, ELIYAS ROFIQ (26 years old), makes a living by working part-time packaging.

The family of three has long depended on financial support from relatives and friends to get by. They have already borrowed heavily to cover previous medical expenses, and now, faced with urgent surgery and ongoing treatment costs, they have nowhere else to turn except to seek help from us.

[Your kindness could be her chance to live.]

After discussion, we have decided to launch a fundraising campaign to help this baby girl raise the RM10,000 needed for her surgery, medical treatment, and milk powder expenses.

At only one month old, she has not even had the chance to truly experience the world, yet she is already fighting for her life. What she needs is not only medical treatment and surgery but also hope, compassion, and the warmth of humanity.

We humbly appeal to all kind-hearted individuals to extend a helping hand and give this little girl a chance to survive this critical stage of life. We also hope everyone can help share this appeal so that every act of kindness may become a source of strength for her to keep living. Thank you.
