SKU: Case-2178

Case No. 2178:Lai Zi Lun, a boy who should be running and playing under the sun, is now forced to fight against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. A bone marrow transplant is his only chance of survival, but the surgery costs RM200,000!

[Why is it me? It’s so unfair.”: A child’s helpless question.]

In March this year, Zi Lun was rushed to the hospital after persistent fever, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea. Before this, unexplained bruises and pain had already appeared on his arms and legs. After detailed examinations, doctors diagnosed him with Precursor B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (Pre-B ALL). In that moment, his family’s world collapsed.

But what broke their hearts even more was his innocent and fragile question: “Why is it me? It’s so unfair.”

Zi Lun’s days in the hospital were bitter and painfully long. Tubes were attached to his body and hands. Every time he saw the nurse put on gloves and prepare a syringe, he felt powerless. Blood tests, injections, and medications left countless needle marks and tape scars across his arms and chest. He endured the physical pain and emotional struggle silently, allowing fate to carve wound after wound on him, all hidden behind his stubborn little face.

Outside the hospital bed, he is clever, cheerful, and bright. He is warming everyone around him like a small sun. Even after shaving his head, the light in his eyes remained. He introduced himself politely, as if illness had never taken his joy away.

[A light in the ward: He used lanterns to brighten a festival.]

On Mid-Autumn Festival, Zi Lun had hoped to return home for a family reunion. Instead, he had to remain in the ward for treatment. He did not cry. Instead, he picked up colored paper and invited his mother to make lanterns with him. He then gifted the lanterns to nurses and other patients. In that moment, the entire ward lit up with his smile. This 10-year-old child conveyed courage and hope in the purest way.

Not long ago, with his father’s company, he tied a red ribbon onto a wish tree. The ribbon swayed gently in the wind, like his strong little life dancing bravely. He is still just a child. He needs constant encouragement and emotional support to keep that flame of hope in his heart burning brightly, lighting the path back to health.

[Chemotherapy is not effective. Bone marrow transplant is the only survival path.]

After six months of chemotherapy, Zi Lun’s condition has not improved significantly. Doctors had to change his medication, requiring him to stay another month in the hospital for further chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is no longer the best option. His only hope of survival is a bone marrow transplant.

However, the matching process is challenging. His mother is the only family member who can donate bone marrow, but it is not a perfect match, and the risk of rejection remains. The priority now is to wait for a donor from Singapore, which further increases the surgical costs.

[A family that has given everything to save him.]

His mother, Lee Pooi Yee (31 years old), quit her job to care for him full-time. His father, Lai Chung Seng (48 years old), supports the entire family by driving an e-hailing car, with income that is low and unstable. There are also two younger brothers at home, aged 6 and 4. The five-member family has already fallen into hardship. To save Zi Lun, their savings have been nearly depleted, and the future feels uncertain.
