Case No. 940: “Christine Susilawaty Eddy relies upon the medical expenses raised from the sale of the house of their family and her husband’s savings to beat her breast cancer. However, the money is insufficient for this prolonged battle. Hence, donation is needed for Phei Ling to overcome her illness”

49-year-old Christine Susilawaty Eddy (Chinese Name: Ong Phei Ling) was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. As she could not afford the expensive amount of medical expenses, she sought various traditional therapies instead. However, her condition deteriorated a few months ago and was forced to admit to the hospital for surgery and treatment. Tens of thousands of ringgits were spent, but the war is not over. Christine and her husband do not have descendant, so donation must be raised in order to help them.

Christine Susilawaty Eddy is a Chinese Indonesian. Although she has married to a Malaysian for a decade, Christine cannot enjoy the same benefits that the Malaysian government hospital offers for locals due to her pending naturalisation application. Fortunately, Beacon Hospital launched “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR) after they learnt about Ivan Kong Hon Choong’s family status. This initiative provided a discount on the expensive medical expenses but the family is still unable to afford the next rounds of treatments.

Christine’s Malaysian husband, 65-year-old Kong Hon Choong is 16 years older than his wife. He is from ordinary family with a little education. Although he has faced two business failures since his slow start, he did not give up and met Christine when he has finally achieved a certain level of success.

Although Christine cannot give birth due to physical factors, the couple worked hard to maintain this marriage. Ivan never abandons his wife.

Who would have thought this tragic news would disrupt the small yet happy family that the couple strived to manage. The acute pain of breast cancer has forced Christine to self-harm herself, forcing Ivan to take her wife to Beacon Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite removing her cancerous breast, Christine’s illness has already entered the fourth stage.

When receiving treatment at Beacon Hospital, the Oral Chemotherapy which intended to shrink her tumours or to kill cancer cells showed no effects on Christine. Therefore, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and Targeted Therapy with stronger efficacy and longer treatment period followed.

These used up the RM40,000 raised by Christine’s family in Indonesia through selling their house as well as savings from Christine and Ivan. On the other hand, Ivan does not want her wife to give up.

Just when they thought things cannot be overturned, Beacon Hospital referred them to Da Ai’s social workers. Christine has to pay RM47,800 for her following medical expenses, and this does not include medical fees during emergency situation, prompting Beacon Hospital to recommend an additional donation of RM22,200. The total is approximately RM70,000.

Ivan and Christine have entrusted Da Ai to crowdfund for them in Malaysia.

Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Da Ai Malaysia calls upon enthusiastic philanthropists to lend a hand to them. Thank you.
