“With him losing both his legs due to diabetes and his only son is still in school, Cheong Lap’s family is facing enormous problems at the moment and they need your help”

Chang Lai Theng (45 years old) and Ling Cheong Lap (51 years old) married late and their son, Chang Yong Jian still a standard five student. They understood that their only son must be well-educated but losing both legs and working ability for Cheong Lap caused the family to have expenses issues, especially medication fees for Cheong Lap’s legs and school fees for their son. Lai Theng’s pitiful salary of RM1350 cannot afford the expenses for these sudden changes and family hurdles.

Ling Cheong Lap used to be a Char Kway Teow chief and a part-time RELA, earning a total salary of RM2000. Before his diabetes worsened, both Cheong Lap and Lai Theng were able to handle their family expenses without worries. Lai Theng is shopping mall merchandiser.

Cheong Lap burnt his legs at home while he was having a foot bath on 8th June, causing his wound cannot be healed and have a virus infection. He admitted to the hospital on 11th June. After one week of emergency treatment, the hospital said that his legs must be amputated. Both Cheong Lap and his wife could not handle this dreadful news. Lai Theng cried she was told that her husband only had to amputate his foot and not both of his legs.

Cheong Lap discharged on 10th August after losing both his legs. Although Cheong Lap lost his legs, Lai Theng continued to encourage him, that if they are healthy, they can still afford to make a living. When Da Ai social workers visited them, Lai Theng said that she cannot live or raise her child alone without the presence of Cheong Lap.

Cheong Lap lost his legs and his working ability due to diabetes. This tragedy washed away all happiness of this family. The family can only rely upon Lai Theng for their expenses. In addition to living expenses, Cheong Lap and Lai Theng need to pay for a school fee of RM700 for their only son and a total of RM800 for Cheong Lap’s treatment and medication fees. Lai Theng’s current financial ability can never meet these needs.
