Case No. 591: Da Ai’s Crowdfunding of RM39,840 for Yeoh Siaw Fong and 8 Other Family Members for Their School Fees and Life Expenses.

“With her husband died and without an income for three months, she has run out of savings. With no guarantee money for the next day’s foods and expenses, her family of 8 is going through severe hardships and they need your help”

46-year-old Yeoh Siaw Fong is a housewife and her husband was the sole breadwinner of the family. However, in the span of 5 months, her husband lost his job due to kidney disease, stroke, and hydrocephalus (He was sent to Klang Hospital and Hospital Sungai Buloh). Having lost the only income channel and all their savings, the family of 8 is going through painful periods and they need helps from kind-hearted people.

Yeoh Siaw Fong has to take care of her 83-year-old father-in-law, 73-year-old mother-in-law, 5 children. As the family has no sources of income, they could not afford school fares for children, rental payment, food, utility bill and daily family expenses. They are currently living in Klang, Selangor.

Su Low Tung was the sole breadwinner of the family. Before he got sick, he was an executive of production department with a monthly wage of RM4000. The family was enjoying prosperity before a series of illnesses affected both Low Tung and his family members. With no other breadwinners in the family, the once happy family has to deal with hardships after hardships.

The couple has 5 children, with the 18-year-old eldest son Su Han Sen started working with a monthly salary of RM1200. After paying for his own expenses, the remaining balance is unable to help his family. All four of them are attending schools.

Siaw Fong and Low Tung have raised a bunch of caring and filial children. Although Siaw Fond can only afford pocket money of RM3 for each child, they did not complain. However, after spending on other life expenses, Siaw Fong could not afford their school fares of RM520 (RM130 x 4).

Mr. Su’s company resumed operation on 29th April, but as he was unable to work for 3 consecutive months, he did not receive any salaries for May, June, and July 2020.

Su Low Tung started his dialysis since February 2020. He only realised that he is diagnosed a stage 5 chronic kidney disease when he was forced to be admitted into Klang Hospital due to swollen legs, insomnia, and vomit. Due to his severe conditions, he immediately went through two dialyses at the hospital. The doctor offered three options of treatments for Mr. Su, which were haemodialysis, water treatment and kidney transplantation, and he had chosen the second treatment that requires four treatments (4 to 6 Hours per Treatment) a day. The doctor inserted an apparatus in his right lower abdomen to ensure that the environment around him was clean and to prevent bacterial infections.

After many dialyses, Su Low Tung’s conditions are under control. However, the condition relapsed in June, causing him to have swollen legs, insomnia, vomit, swollen hands, and fever. A hydrocephalus was also diagnosed on 24th June. He only woke up 5 days later after being admitted to a coma.

Later, he too was diagnosed a stroke and hydrocephalus on 1st July. He did a surgery at Hospital Sungai Buloh at 2.00 A.M, 10th July with blood clots and water removed from his brain. He was then sent to Klang Hospital’s intensive care unit for observation.

On 15th July, the doctor observed that Mr. Su has a sequela from his surgery, and it affected his nerves. Should the condition persist, it will cause cramps all over his body. However, after Da Ai’s social workers visited them on the evening of 17th July, the doctor confirmed Mr. Su has a permanent vegetative state due to his cerebral death (Brain death) and can only rely upon medications and medical equipment to survive. The tragedy did not stop as at 2:50 A.M., 20th July, the doctor certified the patient’s death, causing more miseries to the family.

The once happy family of Yeoh Siaw Fong’s was forced to deal with drastic changes and sudden hardships. In addition to her husband’s illnesses, she also has to take care of her elderly mother-in-law who is suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and skin issues. To rub salt into the wound, she is also worried about her children and their studies; she understands the importance of education for her children.

Yeoh Siaw Fong is very helpless now; she can only entrust Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Da Ai Malaysia to crowdfund and to collect charity funds all across Malaysia on behalf of her for school fares and living expenses of her family members. A total of RM39,840 is needed (RM3,320 a Month).
