Case No 545: Public Funding: Mdm. Yap Chong Ling is seriously ill, public funding of medical expenses RM60,922 to save her life.

“When mother is seriously ill and is struggling between life and death. The father has to take care of the mother and is forced to lose his job. How about the two daughters who are still in primary school?”

The UKM Hospital (HUKM) in Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur is urging Mdm. Yap Chong Ling (41-year-old mother) to pay the medical fees owed RM18,122.00. She not only worries about how to deal with HUKM's bills, but also the coming RM20,000.00 medical expenses will not be able to pay, there is no money at home, where will be the direction of the family of six?

When parents are struggling for lack of medical expenses, 10-year-old daughter Xiao Yu and her 8-year-old sister Jing Ru have difficulty going to school. The two daughters lacked the most basic food and beverage expenses, and they also had to pay for transportation to go to school.

Mdm. Yap Chung Ling and her husband of the same age, Mr.Chan Ka Lok, have 5 daughters. The eldest daughter Chan Xin Yi is 19 years old, the second daughter Pei Ying is 18 years old, and the third daughter died of a hole in the heart when she was 6 months old. The fourth daughters Xiao Yu and the youngest daughter Jing Ru are studying in primary school. Two of their sisters just graduated, they did not find their jobs yet and both of them need their father to take care of them.

Mr. Chan Ka Lok is a good father as well as a good husband. In order to take care of his wife, he will not leave her alone; for the sake of his wife, he has lost his job. In order to take care of their four daughters, Mr. Chan is currently considered as empty-handed and has exhausted all his savings.

He is a car body part painting technician, earning his living as a casual worker and earning a daily salary of RM140. Since his wife is seriously ill and had to be taken to the hospital for rescue at any time, Mr.Chan Ka Lok can only stay with her by her side and become jobless at home.

Mdm.Yap Chong Ling was seriously ill and was tortured for two years. From 2018 to the present, she has suffered from colorectal cancer, uterine cancer, urinary tract rupture, and lymph gland tumors. Every disease requires surgery, and chemotherapy alone has been done 10 times.

She entered and exited the operating room frequently. At this point, she struggled with the disease repeatedly, and she only had a belief that she would not give up her life, so she is motivated to continue fighting between life and death.

Her husband and four daughters are her biggest backing and a source of strength for her continued survival. However, her husband has no financial ability to continue her treatment.

Mdm. Yap Chong Ling's record of fighting with the disease is sad. In March 2018, she suffered from inflammation of the fallopian tube and removed the right fallopian tube.

In April of the same year, just after surgery, she was admitted to the hospital again because of bloating. She was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and removed a small section of her large intestine.

Next, the colorectal cancer cells spread to the uterus, and Mdm. Yap Chong Ling was forced to remove the uterus and a small section of the large intestine. When the operation was performed, her urinary tube was broken and she had to be connected back.

However, the operation unfortunately failed, which led to her having to insert a urinary tube and a urine bag to urinate, which brought her some troubles to concentrate on fighting cancer.

The repeated surgical procedure caused great pain to Mdm.Yap Chong Ling. After several tossing operations, it seemed that everything began to calm down.

However, in October 2019, the doctor found that her cancer had signs of recurrence because a tumor appeared in lymphatic glands. At the return visit in April this year, the doctor determined that there were two more tumors. This is bad news for sunny thunderstorms. In order to save his life, Mdm.Yap Chong Ling has done 10 times of chemotherapy!

After the chemotherapy, everything seems to be calming down again. However, Mdm.Yap Chong Ling still needs to go through the treatment process by the doctor constantly and keep returning to the clinic because she is still seriously ill. She must also go to the hospital regularly to change the urination tube. She and her family live in the new village of Serdang, Selangor.

Mr. Chan Ka Lok is the main support of the family and must find a way to ensure that the children, especially the seriously ill wife, can survive from this crisis. He must lead his four daughters to become the strong backing of his wife. He cannot give up or relax.

However, he now has zero income and no savings, and he has fallen into a helpless dilemma.

Mr. Chan Ka Lok entrusted and appointed the Daai Community Public Funding Platform to launch a one-year public funding of medical expenses and living expenses of RM60,922.00 and authorized Daai to collect funds from all over the country.
